Using Your HVAC to Get Rid of Unwanted Holiday Guests

The temperature is starting to drop, stores are filling with holiday decorations, and radio stations are beginning to play Jingle Bells on loop – which can only mean one thing: it’s the holiday season. It’s that time of year for big meals and family get-togethers. For many of us, seeing family and friends over the holiday season is a joy. But what do you do when people start to overstay their welcome?

When beloved guests turn into unwanted pests, utter and complete neglect of your HVAC system can make sure that no one wants to come a’ calling during the holiday season (let alone stay for an extended visit). If you want to make your home a miserable, uninhabitable place to stay, follow these anti-HVAC tips.

  1. Treat your guests to Dirty Sock Syndrome.

Few things are as unpleasant as the smell of dirty socks and, if your entire home smells like a foot, well, that’s a surefire way to send unwanted relatives packing before the second half of the Cowboys game on Turkey Day. To make your home smell like the inside of a gym bag, make sure to neglect your HVAC system, particularly the indoor coil and drain pan. By letting all of the moisture from the summer accumulate and fester, you’ll have a smorgasbord of bacteria that will reek to high heaven.

  1. Allergies are your allies.

If the raunchy smell of feet isn’t enough to drive your relatives to the door, you may have to resort to even dastardlier measures. Some people may be able to tolerate a foul smell, but few can put up with the stuffy, claustrophobic feeling of an allergy attack. To give your unwanted guests a sneezing attack that no amount of Claritin can overcome, make sure to leave your dingy old air filter in your HVAC system season after season. Air filters need to be replaced periodically to be effective, so the longer you let yours go, the more tear-inducing pollen and dust particles are able to invade your home. When bear mace seems a bit too aggressive, settle for eye-swelling allergies!

  1. Keep your guests on their toes.

When we think about the holidays, we think about spending time with the family, perfectly comfortable on the couch, wearing a festive sweater and enjoying each other’s company. But that’s never the reality. If you want to send people packing, then make sure the thermostat is out of whack. Nothing motivates your guests to hit the bricks like wild swings between battling hypothermia and sweating through the couch cushions. When you fail to have your HVAC system serviced, issues with your thermostat can go unnoticed and, when the thermostat is on the fritz, chestnuts won’t be the only things that feel like they are roasting.

The Holidays are a wonderful time of year and, if you would prefer to not spend quality time with your family, friends, and loved ones, make sure to neglect your heating and cooling systems. But, if you are one of those people who insist on having a joyous and memorable holiday season with all of your favorite people, contact a qualified HVAC specialist. They can ensure that your holiday get-together won’t be spoiled by an HVAC system on the fritz.
