Things You Might Be Doing That Void Your AC’s Warranty

Things You Might Be Doing That Void Your AC’s Warranty

When you live in Southwest Florida, your air conditioner gets a serious workout. Summer temperatures hit triple digits and the winter months don’t guarantee relief for long. With such a demanding workload, even the most reputable air conditioning units can encounter breakdowns. If you’re lucky enough to have a relatively new unit, then the repair could be covered under the manufacturer’s warranty. That is, unless you have done one or more of the following actions that could void your warranty!

Forgetting to Register the Warranty

Registering the warranty seems like such a small task. Filling out a bit of paperwork or even registering online only takes a couple of minutes, but, for whatever reason, this money-saving chore gets put off or even completely forgotten. Forgetting to register your warranty can either greatly reduce the terms of the warranty or void it altogether. Make sure you take the time to register your warranty! Even if you think you’ve missed the deadline, it never hurts to check. You may be able to still get some coverage.

Neglecting Annual Servicing

Not only is it a good idea to have your air conditioning unit looked at annually, but it’s also important to keep records of these service appointments. Regular maintenance checks will keep your air conditioner running efficiently all season long, as well as potentially prevent the need for a warranty in the first place. In the event of a breakdown, proper documentation of regular service visits can help you get the most out of your warranty.

Performing DIY Fixes or Installations

One of the quickest ways to void your warranty is to have your air conditioner installed and serviced by anyone other than a licensed professional. Along with fixing the unit yourself or having your friend who knows a thing or two about repairs take a crack at it, using off-brand parts can void a warranty too. While it may seem like a good idea to skimp and get the off-brand or to just duct tape that leak, it will cost you in the long run.

Air conditioning is a way of life down here. It’s hard to imagine what Florida would be like without it. It’s important to keep your HVAC system in top working condition (while still keeping your wallet full!) and the best way to do that is by taking advantage of perks like warranties. Make sure to have your AC unit serviced regularly, save your work orders, and, whatever you do, don’t take on those repairs without a licensed technician – or else it will cost you in the long run!
